Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret blueprints: Read and analyze engineering drawings, welding symbols, and specifications to plan fabrication sequences.
  • Lay out components: Measure and mark cutting, bending, and reference lines on raw steel materials using squares, tapes, and soapstone.
  • Align and fit: Position, level, and fit together heavy metal sections, plates, angle irons, and I-beams.
  • Operate rigging equipment: Safely utilize overhead cranes, hoists, jacks, and turnbuckles to lift and manipulate large steel segments.
  • Tack-weld structures: Execute simple tack-welding techniques to secure aligned parts temporarily for the final welding process.
  • Modify metals: Cut, grind, bevel, and straighten warped metal pieces using torches, plasma cutters, and industrial grinders.
  • Maintain quality control: Conduct meticulous inspections of fitted parts to ensure tight tolerances and conformance to structural codes.
  • Enforce safety standards: Adhere strictly to OSHA regulations, corporate safety protocols, and proper usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma, GED, or vocational training equivalent.
  • Experience: Minimum 2+ years of layout and fitting experience in a heavy steel manufacturing or fabrication workshop.
  • Technical skills: Demonstrated capability to pass a standard tack weld test (e.g., FCAW or SMAW).
  • Shop math: Exceptional spatial reasoning and math skills to accurately account for steel thickness and weld shrinkage.
  • Physical stamina: Capability to stand for long intervals, lift heavy materials, work in noisy environments, and manage extreme temperature variances.
  • Tool proficiency: Complete familiarity with oxy-fuel torches, magnetic drills, grinders, and rigging gear
