The FYE Senior Peer Mentor will assist with training and program development for peer mentors embedded in UNIV 1101 courses. Responsible for supporting mentors as they aid incoming students with the challenges associated with transitioning into college.Job Duties and Responsibilities:Support FYE peer mentors through developing in-class activities to promote student engagementGuides peer mentors under the direction of the Associate Director and role models appropriate professional behavior and academic success at all times.Build and maintain peer mentor schedules, including floor hours, offsite locations, and UNIV 1101 assignmentsManage Campus Connect by inputting peer mentor appointment availabilities and verifying appointment Summary Report completionCreate activities and training for weekly meetings with FYE peer mentors to aid team building and ongoing peer mentor professional developmentAssist the welcome desk with tasks such as greeting guests, answering the FYE phone, checking in appointments, monitoring peer mentor appointments, and rescheduling appointments when necessaryContribute to the creation and design of digital media for course content, announcements, and events.Support various FYE departmental initiatives, including, but not limited to, peer mentor retreat progress report campaigns, call campaigns, registration assistance, convocation, new student orientation, etc.Collaborate with the Associate Director in interviewing, selecting, and onboarding peer mentorsOther relevant duties as assignedOther Requirements for the Position:Minimum Qualifications:Currently enrolled at SHSU and is in good academic standingAn overall GPA of 2.75 or above (on a 4.0 scale)Served as an FYE mentor for a minimum of 1 academic yearJunior, Senior, or Master’s ClassificationRequired Skills:This position is very high in student contact and requires an individual who demonstrates the following:Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with students, faculty, and staffStrong ability to discuss complex or sensitive topics while maintaining rapport and trustDemonstrated growth mindset with the willingness to learn and be flexibleStrong problem-solving skills and attention to detailAn ability to work effectively and collaboratively, especially with individuals from diverse backgroundsEffective time management & self-initiativeExcellent oral and written communication skills (in person, virtually, and on the telephone)Computer Skills (familiarity with Office 365 applications, Zoom, Blackboard, Canva, or other design software)Open Date:01/01/2026Contact Name & Title:Samantha Aldrich-WollgastContact Phone:936-294-2231Contact Email:[email protected] Statement:Sam Houston State University is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer and Smoke/Drug-Free Workplace.
