Together, let's make a positive impact and empower the next generation of leaders.Job Summary The Campus Police Sergeant - K9 Handler is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment for community members to engage in higher education, ensuring the security of campus properties, and managing an explosives detection K9 unit. This position performs all duties of a sworn police officer while supervising assigned sworn and non-sworn subordinate staff, enforcing applicable laws and institutional regulations, and upholding best practices for police K9 handling. It is a designated position of trust and requires specialized training in explosives detection and K9 handling techniques.This position is designated as Campus Security Authority (CSA) and is responsible for reporting crimes and other incidents to the Clery Act Compliance Officer for inclusion in the Annual Campus Security Report in accordance with the Federal Clery Act and GGC policy.Responsibilities Deploys and maintains a trained explosives detection K9 to assist in campus safety operations, including bomb threats, event security, and suspicious package investigations.Provides daily care, training, and maintenance for the assigned K9, ensuring the animal's health, well-being, and operational readiness.Promotes fair and equitable enforcement of applicable laws, policies, regulations, and institutional rules while maintaining the professionalism, integrity, values, and goals of the department.Functions as a first-line supervisor, leading and training officers in law enforcement duties, including K9-related protocols and emergency response procedures.Conducts routine and specialized K9 searches in collaboration with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies; Ensures compliance with best practices in K9 handling, training, and care, following industry standards such as the North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA) and the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA).Oversees and documents K9 training, deployments, and performance in compliance with agency and accreditation standards.Performs duties as an Incident Commander for criminal or other large-scale incidents, including those requiring K9 deployment; Participates in planning and implementing campus emergency response plans, ensuring integration of K9 capabilities.Serves as a liaison with external law enforcement agencies to enhance cooperative efforts in explosives detection and public safety.Maintains confidentiality of sensitive law enforcement and security information; Performs other law enforcement duties as required, including patrols, investigations, community engagement, and crime prevention programs.Required Qualifications High School or GEDFour (4) years of experience as a GAPOST-certified peace officer in good standing.Completion of a recognized Police K9 Handler certification course with a focus on explosives detection.Experience in law enforcement supervision and leadership.No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.Valid and unrestricted Georgia Driver's License.Preferred Qualifications 2 Year / Associate Degree4 Year / Bachelor's DegreeOne (1) year of experience as a K9 handler in a law enforcement agency.Certification through NAPWDA, USPCA, or similar recognized K9 organization.Experience in campus policing and community-oriented policing strategies.Completion of Georgia POST Peace Officer Professional Training Certificates in advanced policing techniques.Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Strong understanding of explosives detection K9 handling, training, and deployment best practices.Knowledge of law enforcement procedures, including search and seizure laws related to K9 usage.Ability to provide ongoing training for K9 and maintain compliance with certification standards.Understanding of campus security policies, risk assessments, and emergency response planning.Proficiency in conducting K9-assisted searches, crowd control, and safety inspections.Strong leadership and supervisory skills, including coaching and mentoring of officers.Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive law enforcement matters with discretion.Proficiency in using law enforcement reporting systems and K9 documentation procedures.Conditions of Employment Hiring is contingent upon eligibility to work in the United States and proof of eligibility will be contemporaneously required upon acceptance of an employment offer.
