Job Title: Swim Program Instructor - Part Time SeasonalLocation:Multiple SitesReports To: Building Principal and Supervisor for K-12 Physical EducationWork Schedule/FLSA Status: Hourly/Non-exemptDuring school year: Weekday evenings and/or weekend daytime hours. During summer: Weekday mornings and afternoons only.Salary Schedule: Non-negotiated HourlyPosition Purpose: Responsible for planning coordinating and teaching learn-to-swim and water safety courses; Supervises and assigns swim program students to staff Swim Aides based on students level of swimming ability.Essential Performance ResponsibilitiesEnsures and provides a safe healthy & clean pool environment at all timesConsistent and vigilant monitoring of the pool is required; anticipating potential hazardous situations and acting accordingly to prevent future occurrencesResponds quickly efficiently and professionally to any emergency situation; completes necessary paperwork and notifies the appropriate professional staff memberDemonstrates knowledge and understanding of all aquatic facility rules and regulationsDemonstrates ability to enforce all aquatic facility rules and regulationsPrepares aquatic instructional equipment before classes begin and put away when lessons have endedProvides corrective and positive feedback to students to foster a positive learning atmosphereFollows oral and written directions accuratelyProvides specific directions for swim aides and develops their knowledge skills and capability for swim instructionProvides swim instruction to students of all ages abilities and skill levelsDemonstrates ability to recognize a distressed swimmer and provides appropriate assistance when neededMay perform other related duties as assigned by supervisory personnelAdditional Duties Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.Equipment: This position may require the ability to use water safety and pool maintenance equipment in addition to basic office equipment such as computers copiers scanners and fax machine. Must always comply with OPSs guidelines for equipment use.Travel: Limited travel may be required.Physical and Mental Demands Work Hazards:Ability to work in the water and humid wet environment for extended periods of timeMust be able to respond rapidly in emergency situationsMust have organization time management communication and interpersonal skillsWork in school building swimming pool environmentsAbility to apply simple understanding to carry out detailed but basic written and/or oral instructionsAbility to read and use information from written materials and visual displaysAbility to bend kneel stoop and maintain balance while performing job related tasksAbility to work in standing/walking positions on a frequent basis throughout the work shiftInterrelations: Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendorsWill be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasksWill be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacyMust understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleaguesExpected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly professional manner and provide quick responsive customer serviceEmployee Punctuality and AppearanceIn order for schools to operate effectively employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday unless the employee has received approved leave.Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employees supervisor or building administrator.All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.Knowledge Skills and Abilities:Minimum 16 years of ageCPR and First Aid certifications requiredWater Safety Instructor certification required.Lifeguard certification preferred.Minimum of three years swim instruction experienceDemonstrates proficiency of the English language to read and communicate with othersMust possess thorough knowledge and application of water safety skillsAbility and patience to work interactively with studentsExcellent skills in verbal and written communicationAbility to understand the individual needs of each studentDisplays a significant degree of professionalism and confidentialityAbility to conform to proper standards of professional dress and appearanceKnowledge of OPSs mission purpose goals and the role of every employee in achieving each of them* NOTE: The statements herein are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.
