Tax Managing Director, Alternative Investments

Job Description

Job Summary: This role in our Alternative Investments practice assists in providing tax compliance & consulting services to our Venture Capital, Private Equity, Hedge Fund, and Real Estate clients.

Job Duties

Tax Compliance

  • Ensures client compliance with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensures firm and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
  • Applies an understanding of the client’s unique circumstances, documentation, and other legal requirements to prepare required filings (tax returns) using a system of review and documentation to ensure full compliance and low tax burden.
  • Collects all data needed to comply with filing requirements and communicates missing items to prepare returns.
  • Utilizes firm compliance software to maximize efficiency in the tax prep process.
  • Collaborates with Principals, Senior Managers, Managers, Tax Seniors, and Associates to complete projects, following up with open-item lists.
  • Delivers high‑quality federal, state, and international tax compliance services.
  • Leads complex engagements with a team of tax professionals.
  • Manages the engagement, including billing, collections, and project budget.
  • Builds and manages client relationships; assists in developing new clients and opportunities.
  • Documents client work and conclusions in the client tax file.

Tax Consulting

  • Identifies, develops, recommends, and implements efficient and effective tax strategies.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Manages teams of Senior Managers, Managers, Tax Seniors, and Associates.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics (required).
  • Master’s Degree in Accounting or Taxation (preferred).

Experience

  • Ten (10) or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience (required).
  • Financial Services industry experience supporting Alternative Investment funds including Venture Capital, Private Equity, Real Estate, and Hedge Funds (preferred).
  • Proficiency in the taxation of partnerships (preferred).

License/Certifications

  • CPA or Licensed Attorney, or IRS Enrolled Agent (required).
  • CFP or Master’s in Tax (preferred).

Software

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat (preferred).
  • Experience with tax research databases (preferred).
  • Proficiency in tax compliance process software (preferred).

Salary Ranges

California: $190,000 – $335,000

Colorado: $170,000 – $225,000

Iowa: $175,000 – $250,000

Maryland: $185,000 – $260,000

Massachusetts: $215,000 – $300,000

Minnesota: $170,000 – $250,000

New Jersey: $190,000 – $350,000

New York City/Long Island/Westchester: $230,000 – $350,000

Washington: $180,000 – $240,000

Washington DC: $190,000 – $300,000
