Job Summary

The Core Tax Services Senior Manager advises clients on the tax implications of their business objections, evaluates and selects alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifies methods of complying with tax regulations, and serves as the primary contact for complex tax issues. The role involves applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizing and communicating potential risks, monitoring changes in tax policy, and making top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. The Senior Manager is also a critical member of the office/region leadership team and participates in marketing, networking, and business development while maintaining client relationships.

Job Duties

Tax Compliance

  • Ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
  • Ensure self and client service teams comply with all firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
  • Conduct top‑level review of T/R and resolve all tax issues with the client.
  • Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consult with the client and/or partner as appropriate.

Research

  • Identify when research is needed and frame issues clearly for the engagement team.
  • Provide research methodology for efficient research processes.
  • Train managers and staff on research skills and on framing tax issues for analysis.
  • Involve firm specialists as appropriate.

ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals

  • Apply firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding ASC 740, FAS 109, and FIN 48.
  • Help others learn and apply ASC 740 and related policies.
  • Review tax provisions, apply in‑depth knowledge of ASC 740 when applicable, and review prepared workpapers.
  • Explain and discuss the components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions with the client.

Tax Consulting

  • Develop, recommend, and implement efficient methods to maximize client benefits and reduce current and future taxes.
  • Apply tax knowledge and business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions and manage risk.
  • Consult with STS specialists on applicability of STS consulting specialties.
  • Monitor implementation of work plans for tax consulting projects.
  • Manage inquiries from federal and state agencies and provide assistance with protests at the appeals level.
  • Implement applicable firm strategies and manage client expectations.

Tax Specialization

  • Develop in‑depth understanding of one or more tax areas (e.g., individual, corporate, pass‑through, state and local, international, transfer pricing).
  • Organize and conduct effective external CPE training sessions in area of specialization at least once per year.
  • Mentor managers, seniors, and associates on specialization areas.

Strategy Development

  • Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve client, firm, or personnel positions.
  • Research and implement tax strategies and experiment with new strategies.
  • Suggest improvements to previous work products or approaches.
  • Lead marketing campaigns if applicable.
  • Present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.

Other Duties

  • Additional responsibilities as required by the role.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects.
  • Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments.
  • Train associates and seniors on all current software tools.
  • Act as a career advisor to associates and senior associates.
  • Schedule and manage workload of associates and senior associates.
  • Provide verbal and written performance feedback.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in accounting, finance, economics, or statistics preferred.
  • Master’s in accountancy or taxation preferred.

Experience

  • Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required.
  • Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience required.

License / Certifications

  • CPA certification, attorney (admitted to practice in a US jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) required.
  • Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.

Software

  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
  • Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.

Compensation

  • California Range: $146,000 - $200,000
  • Colorado Range: $165,000 - $180,000
  • Illinois Range: $140,000 - $190,000
  • Maryland Range: $150,000 - $180,000
  • Massachusetts Range: $150,000 - $206,000
  • Minnesota Range: $130,000 - $190,000
  • New Jersey Range: $155,000 - $200,000
  • Ohio Range: $125,000 - $200,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $190,000 - $225,000
  • Washington Range: $158,400 - $215,400
  • Washington DC Range: $162,000 - $190,000
