Thoracic Surgery - Physician at Center for Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery
Job Description
Seeking an experienced or fellowship-trained Thoracic Surgeon to join a multidisciplinary cardiothoracic and thoracic surgery program. This position focuses primarily on adult thoracic surgery, including both elective and urgent cases. The successful candidate will provide high-quality, patient-centered surgical care across multiple settings, participating in operative and non-operative management.
Clinical Practice & Case Mix:
The thoracic surgeon will manage a full-scope adult thoracic practice, including but not limited to:
- Pulmonary resections (lobectomy, segmentectomy, wedge)
- Esophageal surgery (e.g., esophagectomy, fundoplication)
- Mediastinal tumor resections
- Thoracic trauma and emergent procedures
- Minimally invasive and robotic-assisted thoracic procedures
The surgeon will also:
- Participate in preoperative and postoperative management, including ICU and step-down care
- Collaborate with pulmonology, oncology, critical care, and cardiothoracic colleagues
- Support multidisciplinary tumor boards and procedural planning
Program Highlights:
- Dedicated thoracic operating rooms with minimally invasive and robotic capabilities

Call & Schedule:
- Call coverage primarily provided by the new hire, supported by two other thoracic/cardiothoracic surgeons
- Most work located at Detroit; occasional coverage required at satellite location
- Balanced mix of elective and urgent/emergent cases
Scope of Practice:
- Adult Thoracic Surgery (100%)
- Pulmonary resections
- Esophageal surgery
- Mediastinal surgery
- Thoracic trauma and emergent cases
- Minimally invasive and robotic-assisted thoracic procedures
Quality & Recognition:
- Participation in hospital quality programs and national benchmarks for thoracic outcomes
- Opportunity to shape program growth, including adoption of advanced surgical techniques
Qualifications:
- MD or DO with completed thoracic or cardiothoracic surgery fellowship
- Board-certified or board-eligible in thoracic surgery
- Experience in adult thoracic surgery preferred, but fellowship training may be sufficient
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident only – no visas sponsored
- Experience with minimally invasive and robotic thoracic procedures preferred
