Overall Responsibilities:
An aluminum truck cap welder is a skilled tradesperson responsible for fabricating and assembling aluminum shells and tonneau covers for pickup trucks. This role primarily involves using TIG (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) to join thin-gauge aluminum components based on technical specifications.
Core Responsibilities
- Welding & Assembly: Join metal parts together using specialized aluminum welding techniques, ensuring structural integrity and precision.
- Equipment Setup: Configure welding machines and tools, including adjusting heat settings, wire speeds, and gas mixtures specifically for aluminum alloys.
- Fabrication Tasks: Perform manual tasks such as cutting, grinding and finish metal products.
- Blueprint Reading: Interpret engineering drawings and weld prints to determine accurate layouts, dimensions, and weld placement.
- Quality Inspection: Examine finished welds for defects like craters or warping and verify they meet company standards and customer requirements.
- Safety & Maintenance: Follow strict OSHA safety protocols, wear required PPE (welding helmets, respirators) and maintain equipment in good working order.
Key Skills and Qualifications
- Technical Proficiency: Deep expertise in TIG welding on aluminum (common alloys include 5052 and 6061).
- Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long shifts (up to 12 hours), lift to 50 pounds, and work in environments with heat and fumes.
- Experience: Employers typically prefer at least 1-2 years of prior welding experience in a manufacturing or metal fabrication setting.
- Education: A high school diploma or GED is usually required; a welding certification from a trade school is often highly preferred.
