Youll be responsible for overseeing both the operational and administrative aspects of the department ensuring everything runs smoothly safely and efficiently.This position is more than just managing schedules and logistics its about building a strong team fostering growth and creating a positive work environment. Youll be hands-on in interviewing hiring and training new team members while also supporting their development through performance reviews coaching and recognition. If youre passionate about people operations and making a meaningful impact every day this could be the perfect fit.See our employees in action to learn more at the safety performance operating practices and financial productivity of the operationInterface with customers and interchange partners monitor the quality of service in accordance with contractual terms and quickly resolve issues or delays.Communicate and coordinate with peer managers in all other departments.Assist in railcar-switching function as necessary to maintain operationsDirectly supervise train crew employeesManage schedules and payroll staying within the targeted budgetConduct and document efficiency/operational tests according to company and federal rules regulations policies and practices.Respond to and investigate accidents / incidents (derailments personal injury etc.) prepare associated reports and provide proper notificationPartner with the General Manager and Human Resources on hiring and employee relations according to policies when necessaryCoach and train employees in operating practices according to federal regulations and company policiesAssist with other projects and perform other duties as assignedWorking Conditions / Physical Requirements:Full-time (40 plus hours weekly)Varying schedule in a 24/7 work environment that includes nights holidays weekends and on-callMust be available to take calls and report outside of normal business hours on short notice to handle emergencies or situations related to maintaining fluid railroad operationsOutdoor work in all weather conditionsWalking long distances on uneven surfaces and climbing ladders and equipment always ensuring three points of contact in varying environmental conditionsAble to lift up to 75 pounds from floor to waist and carry short distancesAble to squat bend and lift overheadHave good balance and coordinationMust meet vision requirements (including color)Skills and Experience5 years of work experience in the railroad industry with supervisory duties; 7 years of experience in the railroad industry preferredCertified as a Locomotive Engineer or Conductor is a plusKnowledge and understanding of FRA regulationsEffective communication skills both written and verbalEffective computer skills (Microsoft Office applications reporting etc.)Experience working in a safety-sensitive work environmentPossess situational awareness and decision-making abilities to respond effectively in a safety sensitive environmentRequired Education and CredentialsAssociates degree or an equivalent combination of high school diploma / GED and experienceValid drivers licenseAt least 18 years of ageEmployment Requirements:Pre-employment physical hearing and vision medical reviewSubject to federally mandated drug and alcohol testing including pre-employment drug screeningBackground screening including criminal and motor vehicle driving historyRelocation:Must live within 50 miles of assigned location or be willing to relocate.This position is employed by the specific entity set forth in the job posting.Genesee & Wyoming Inc. and its subsidiary companies do not discriminate in employment on the basis of race color religion sex (including pregnancy and gender identity) national origin political affiliation sexual orientation marital status disability genetic information age membership in an employee organization retaliation parental status military service or any other protected status under federal state or local laws.
