Provides instruction and training classes, wet labs and special training sessions for ACS staff, research partners and their staff and other customers. Maintain the training animal colonies, which includes ordering, acclimation, weighing and maintaining needed animal records. Will complete administrative duties to include creating or adjusting class schedules, confirmation of class enrollment in selected classes and updating completion of classes in MyTraining database. Will Maintain the training room, associated equipment within and order needed supplies. Provides clinical care to laboratory animals as instructed by Clinical Veterinarians. Maintains clinical health records and supporting records and databases as needed. Administers injections, oral medications, removes sutures, dresses wounds, change bandages and provides other routine veterinary procedures. Performs activities relating to veterinary care as directed, including but not limited to triage, assessment, treatment, sample collection, documentation, anesthesia and surgery support. Performs animal health treatments, ensuring clinical health records are complete and current. May perform perioperative surgical monitoring and care, assistance with procedures and record keeping. Maintain accurate, precise inventories of drugs and related records. Ensures compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations and guidelines concerning quality assurance and laboratory animal care and use. Leads customer service communication, protocol and special services support, and technical service support (including anesthesia, creating project estimates, protocol related procedures and drug inventory). Ensures treatment regimens are consistent with contemporary veterinary practices and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approved protocol provisions. Demonstrates an excellent understanding of established protocols and procedures. Collects biological and tissue specimens for diagnostic evaluations from laboratory animals. This may include but is not limited to collecting blood samples, fecal samples, culture specimens, urine samples, skin scrapings, tissues from necropsy animals and any other specimen requested by the veterinary staff or other samples necessary for health surveillance. Completion of the necessary laboratory record and requisitions is included. Processes incoming animals and assists in routine health maintenance. This includes Preparing records for incoming animals, drawing blood for laboratory processing from animal species, submitting properly labeled tubes and clinical information to the laboratory in a timely manner, coordinating laboratory requisitions with laboratory personnel, administers vaccines and anthelmintics, collects culture specimens, fecal collection, performs testing, and administers other medications as directed. Serves in a leadership role working independently in assigned projects and seeking ways to improve processes, assumes some scheduling and oversight of responsibilities as assigned by the VTAM, VTM or Clinical Veterinarian in their absence or as projects necessitate. Provides technical assistance and support for ACS staff, investigators and other customers. Establishes working relationships and communicates effectively with university research staff and ACS staff. Will be required to keep up to date on SOPs in Policy Manger and input time worked in Time Clock Plus using facility computers during normal working hours. Ensure that leave requests, overtime requests and weekend change requests are submitted timely to area manager. Other duties as assigned.Expected Salary: $27.00/HrRequired Qualifications: Degree from an accredited veterinary technology program; or an associate's degree and three years of experience as a veterinary technician, including work with research animals.Preferred: Veterinary Technician National Examination certification (VTNE) strongly preferred. Certification as Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) or above by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science will be encouraged within 18 months of hire unless otherwise specified by manager. Positions that specialize and focus on surgical and anesthesia support are strongly encouraged to pursue a Surgical Research Anesthetist (SRA) Certification from the Academy of Surgical Research.
