Position Description Final Filing Deadline: December 31 2025Exam #: 25/30G21/12JGWeights & Measurers Inspector I/IILevel I: $4846.00 - $6619.00 MonthlyLevel II: $5574.00 - $7251.00 MonthlyThe Monterey County Agricultural Commissioners Office acts as the local enforcement agency for specific laws and regulations pertaining to agriculture and business. Major areas of responsibility and jurisdiction include; pesticide use enforcement plant quarantine pest exclusion pest detection fruit and vegetable standardization nursery seed and weights and measures enforcement.A Weights & Measurers Inspector position is currently available within the Agricultural Commissioners Office. Weights & Measures Inspectors enforce Weights & Measures laws and regulations. Incumbents travel throughout the county inspecting and testing weighing and measuring devices verifying price accuracy at point-of-sale systems ensure accurate package labeling and perform other related duties as required.Level Iis an entry-level position in the Weights & Measures Inspector class series. Incumbents receive training and learn inspection methods procedures and relevant laws and regulations. They work under direct supervision and must obtain one of three County Weights and Measures Inspector Licenses issued by CDFA as well as a Class B license within 12 months of hire. A second Inspector license must be obtained within two years of hire.Level II is the first experienced working level in the Weights & Measures Inspector class series. Incumbents perform a broader range of duties under general supervision. Incumbents must possess at least two County Weights and Measures Inspector Licenses issued by CDFA have one year of experience equivalent to a Weights and Measure Inspector I and are expected to obtain a Class B license within 8 months of hire.This classification is part of a flexible series. Incumbents appointed at the lower level of the career series may be promoted to a higher level of the career series subject to meeting the employment standards for the higher class and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority in accordance with the Flexible Staffing Program and GuidelinesThe Eligible List established by this recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time part-time or temporary basis County-wide.Examples of DutiesWeights & Measurers Inspector IAssists in inspection and testing of various types of commercially used retail industrial agricultural and specialty scales for accuracy within established tolerance limits and compliance with specifications and user requirements.Assists in the inspection and testing of various types of commercially used measuring devices including those that dispense petroleum products (gaseous liquid and natural) chemicals and are used in the measurement of electricity for accuracy within established tolerance limits and compliance with specifications and user requirements.Seals devices inspected and tested and issues certifications of inspection.Creates maintains and stores records of work performedResponds to consumer questions/complaintsAssists in the testing (and under-cover purchase) of packaged goods for proper quantity using statistical sampling techniques inspects labeling and sales methods.Assists in the inspection of weighmasters and weighmaster recordsMay issue orders to correct or condemn defective weighing and measuring devices remove consumer and/or wholesale packages from sale prohibit a weighmaster from issuing certificates prohibit the sale or removal of motor fuelWeights & Measurers Inspector IIIn An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:Weights & Measurers Inspector IPursuant to the California Code of Regulations Title 3 Division 1 Chapter 2 Article 1 one of the following options is required:Option I:Possession of one or more valid statewide specific category licenses as a County Weights and Measures Inspector or County Agricultural Inspector/Biologist.Option IIPossession of a bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college with specialization in one or more of the qualifying disciplines ofChemical Science Commerce Engineering Law Enforcement Marketing Mathematics Physical Science Physics and/or StatisticsOption IIIPossession of a bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college in any discipline with a minimum of 30 semester units or equivalent in one or any combination of the qualifying disciplines of:Chemical ScienceCommerceEngineeringLaw EnforcementMarketingMathematicsPhysical SciencePhysics and/or StatisticsCandidates registered as senior students in an accredited four-year college in one of the qualifying disciplines listed above may be admitted to the exam; however a license willnotbe issued until proof of graduation is provided by the applicant.Provided the candidate possesses a minimum of 30 semester units or equivalent in one or any combination of qualifying disciplines listed above experience in one or more of the following may be substituted for up to two years of college on a year-for-year basis:Enforcement of weights and measures or agricultural lawsThe inspection maintenance repair or installation of weighing or measuring instruments or equipmentConsumer protection or resolution of consumer complaints in a public or private consumer affairs agencyLaw enforcement or investigation work in a federal state or local jurisdiction orResponsible quality or quantity control work in the production of consumer commodities.
