Overall Responsibilities:

An aluminum truck cap welder is a skilled tradesperson responsible for fabricating and assembling aluminum shells and tonneau covers for pickup trucks. This role primarily involves using TIG (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) to join thin-gauge aluminum components based on technical specifications.

Core Responsibilities

  • Welding & Assembly: Join metal parts together using specialized aluminum welding techniques, ensuring structural integrity and precision.
  • Equipment Setup: Configure welding machines and tools, including adjusting heat settings, wire speeds, and gas mixtures specifically for aluminum alloys.
  • Fabrication Tasks: Perform manual tasks such as cutting, grinding and finish metal products.
  • Blueprint Reading: Interpret engineering drawings and weld prints to determine accurate layouts, dimensions, and weld placement.
  • Quality Inspection: Examine finished welds for defects like craters or warping and verify they meet company standards and customer requirements.
  • Safety & Maintenance: Follow strict OSHA safety protocols, wear required PPE (welding helmets, respirators) and maintain equipment in good working order.

Key Skills and Qualifications

  • Technical Proficiency: Deep expertise in TIG welding on aluminum (common alloys include 5052 and 6061).
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long shifts (up to 12 hours), lift to 50 pounds, and work in environments with heat and fumes.
  • Experience: Employers typically prefer at least 1-2 years of prior welding experience in a manufacturing or metal fabrication setting.
  • Education: A high school diploma or GED is usually required; a welding certification from a trade school is often highly preferred.
