Remote Staff Data Scientist | Airbnb

Airbnb’s Core Data Science team is looking for a Staff Data Scientist with deep expertise in experimentation and causal inference. This high-impact role supports the development of Airbnb’s experimentation platform and helps solve complex measurement challenges across the marketplace.

About the Role

This position focuses on advancing experimentation methods and tooling to support reliable causal measurement at scale. Collaborating closely with engineering and data teams, the Staff Data Scientist will build scalable solutions that influence decision-making, accelerate ML/AI testing, and improve platform-wide experimentation standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Advance Bayesian inference models and bias correction techniques for marketplace experiments

• Develop surrogate metrics to speed up testing and improve signal quality

• Build continuous testing frameworks, including bandit-based optimization tools

• Translate complex business challenges into causal solutions with real-world impact

• Mentor teams and share experimentation best practices across the company

Qualifications

• PhD or advanced degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Economics, Mathematics, Operations Research)

• 6+ years (PhD) or 8+ years (non-PhD) of experience in experimentation, causal inference, or related areas

• Expertise in R, Python, or similar programming languages (Scala, Java, C++ a plus)

• Proven ability to apply advanced methods to real product environments

• Strong communication skills for both technical and cross-functional audiences

• Publications in peer-reviewed journals or major conferences (a plus)

Work Location & Eligibility

Remote work is available within approved U.S. states. Occasional travel to an Airbnb office or offsite may be required. Refer to Airbnb’s Remote Work Eligibility List for excluded states.

• Salary range: $194,000–$240,000 USD
